Writing & Design

Many of our professional problems derive from a failure to grasp the workings of language. An understanding of the art(s) of writing can also provide useful insights and strategies to those whose professional work is not directly connected to writing. Communication is the most central concept in design, for example, yet few have explored the implications of this. Judgments (of purpose, methodology, and quality) are typically left to patrons and/or professional critics. Important conversations are thereby neglected and skills lost.

Knowledge has form(s). There are no "pure facts". If we wish to see knowledge and reflect on knowledge, we must design representations of reality, including knowledge.

And to do this well requires artistic as well as critical skills.
